When off-the-shelf software stops being enough

Every business starts with off-the-shelf tools, and for a while, that's exactly right — there's no reason to build custom software for a problem a $30-a-month subscription already solves.

The signal that something has changed is usually quiet: a spreadsheet that's become a load-bearing part of the business, a process that only one person fully understands, a tool that gets 'worked around' more than it gets used as intended.

None of that means you need to rebuild everything. It usually means one specific workflow has outgrown its generic tool, and a targeted piece of automation or custom software closes the gap without touching everything else.
